Kinkaku-ji golden pavilion Temple in Kyoto Japan

Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. The temple is one of the most famous and visited temples in Japan, known for its golden leaf covered two upper stories. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is considered one of the 17 Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

The temple was built in 1397 by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a retirement villa. After his death, the temple was converted into a Zen temple by his son. The temple's main hall, the Kinkaku, is three stories high and the top two stories are covered in gold leaf. The temple's garden is a traditional Japanese garden, and is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan.


Visitors can take a walk around the temple's garden and admire the temple from different angles. The temple also offers a tea ceremony, where visitors can experience traditional Japanese tea ceremony and enjoy matcha (green tea) with traditional sweets in a traditional tea room.


Kinkaku-ji is open year-round, and is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto. Visitors can access the temple by taking bus number 101 or 205 from Kyoto Station or by walking from the nearby Kinkaku-ji-michi bus stop.
