Gion in Kyoto Japan

Gion is a traditional neighborhood located in Kyoto, Japan, known for its narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and shops. It is particularly famous for its geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) who still live and work in the area.


Gion is considered one of the most popular and well-preserved geisha districts in Japan and is a popular spot for tourists to catch a glimpse of geisha and maiko in their traditional attire. Visitors can take a walk through the streets of Gion, where they can see traditional buildings and streetscapes, as well as visit shops selling traditional Japanese goods.


One of the famous spot in Gion is Hanamikoji Street, which is a picturesque alley lined with traditional teahouses and restaurants. Visitors can also visit the Gion Corner, a traditional theater where they can watch traditional performances such as bunraku (puppet theater), kyogen (comic theater), and the dance of geisha and maiko.

Gion is located in the center of Kyoto, and can be easily accessed by public transportation, it's also walkable from the nearby Higashiyama Station.
